OPC UA Targeted for the TenAsys INtime RTOS

Unified Automation, ascolab GmbH, and TenAsys will work together to provide an OPC UA communication server for embedded x86 platforms.

Schwabach, Germany – February 04, 2009. Unified Automation GmbH and ascolab GmbH announce their technology partnership with TenAsys Corporation (Beaverton, Oregon, USA), a leading provider of real-time OS and virtualization software technology,  for application of the OPC standard Unified Architecture (OPC UA) SDK to the TenAsys INtime RTOS.

Unified Automation, a provider of OPC automation components and development tools, is a leader in providing ANSI C and C++ cross-platform embedded products and services for OPC UA. TenAsys’ INtime RTOS plus Unified Automation’s OPC UA SDK equals a never before realized OPC platform that combines the flexibility of Windows with the certainty of hard real time determinism.
The OPC UA communication stack can be implemented directly on the INtime RTOS, allowing OPC data services to be tightly coupled with real-time control applications. This arrangement reduces resource requirements and avoids state inconsistencies. OPC UA on INtime eliminates the fundamental limitation of traditional OPC systems, namely that they are restricted to non-deterministic Windows platforms using only a COM/DCOM communication interface.
With INtime on a multi core processor, the OPC UA communication stack and associated OPC server can run on dedicated cores. Unified Automation’s OPC UA plus INtime allows users to operate their OPC UA server deterministically on a network-attached embedded x86 PC, where the INtime RTOS runs standalone, or on an INtime RTOS “local node” running in conjunction with an embedded Windows PC.
With access to Unified Automation’s OPC UA SDK on the TenAsys INtime RTOS, the need for Windows-based OPC servers is reduced because developers can now integrate the OPC server directly into the embedded node, significantly reducing the cost and complexity of OPC systems and simultaneously improving their reliability.

About OPC UA

The OPC Foundation defines standards for online data exchange between automation systems. They address access to current data (OPC DA), alarms and events (OPC A&E) and historical data (OPC HDA). Those standards are successfully applied in industrial automation.
The new OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) unifies the existing standards and brings them to state-of-the-art technology using service-oriented architecture (SOA). Platform-independent technology allows the deployment of OPC UA beyond current OPC applications only running on Windows-based PC systems. OPC UA can also run on embedded systems as well as Linux / UNIX based enterprise systems. The provided information can be generically modelled and therefore arbitrary information models can be exposed using OPC UA.
Visit the OPC Foundation website at www.opcfoundation.org for detailed information regarding the OPC Unified Architecture standard.
